SANTA LUCIJA

BACKGROUND

The locality of Santa Luċija covers an area of just 0.7 km², making it one of Malta’s smaller villages. It is surrounded by the neighbouring communities of Tarxien, Paola, Għaxaq, Gudja, and Luqa, forming part of the island’s central‑southern region. Despite its size, Santa Luċija is known for its peaceful atmosphere and close ties with the surrounding towns.

WHAT TO SEE

The locality is surrounded by a green belt with numerous gardens and patios filled with trees and flowers, creating a peaceful environment for residents and visitors.

Santa Luċija’s most iconic attraction is the Chinese Garden of Serenity, a symbolic space designed to reflect the harmony of nature and human life. Built on principles of balance between rocks and water, the garden represents the journey of life from birth to maturity, offering areas for contemplation, reflection, and community. It has become a cultural landmark and a symbol of the locality.

Other notable green spaces include a picnic area, Gnien l‑Iskultur (Sculpture Garden), and a jogging track at Ġnien taż‑Żebbuġ along Triq il‑Barrani. Further south lies Wied Garnaw, divided into several zones, which adds to the locality’s natural charm. Together, these spaces highlight Santa Luċija’s commitment to greenery, recreation, and serenity, making it one of Malta’s most distinctive and peaceful villages.

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

Holy Week in Santa Luċija is marked by devotion and tradition. The celebrations begin with the Our Lady of Sorrows procession on the Friday before Palm Sunday, a moving event where statues of the Virgin Mary are carried through the streets, accompanied by prayers and hymns. On Maundy Thursday (Ħamis ix‑Xirka), the parish church commemorates the Last Supper with the washing of the feet ceremony, followed by the cherished custom of visiting multiple churches in the seven visits tradition. These solemn rituals highlight the community’s deep faith and the reflective spirit that characterizes Holy Week in Santa Luċija.
